Even though all of our alumni families qualify for food stamps – 75% tell us that they struggle to feed their children. Why? Because the Colorado computer system responsible for processing and maintaining food stamp benefits – CBMS – is so BAD. We constantly get calls from moms who have had their food stamps shut off and they don’t know why – or who have had their food stamps reduced for unknown reasons – or who have received letters saying they received too much food stamp assistance in the past and must now pay it back. Meanwhile, while our case manager tries to help them figure out what has happened, they don’t have enough money for food!
