Jefferson County Housing Authority Opens Section 8 List 4/28/2011 and 4/29/2011

Great News: Jefferson County Housing Authority Section 8   waiting List is Opening for two days!

* Please read all the information below carefully.  The waiting list is only opening for two days.  Usually, it is only open two days for the whole year.  In this time, there will likely be thousands of people submitting their name.  The housing authority will then randomly pull people’s names off the waiting list (like a Lottery) and those people will be offered a Section 8 Voucher.  Also, you need to re-submit your name every year – and notify the housing authority if your mailing address changes so they are able to contact you.

If you need affordable housing, this is an excellent opportunity, however, be aware that there are thousands of people who need this, while only a few vouchers are available.

“The Jefferson County Housing Authority will be handing out random choice lottery tickets in order to be considered for possible placement on Jefferson County Housing Authority’s (JCHA’s) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program.
Lottery tickets will be available on two days only:
FROM 8:00 A.M. TO 3:00 P.M. ONLY

Where:  7490 West 45th Avenue
Wheat Ridge, Colorado 80033
(Just east of Wadsworth on 45th Avenue, next to Pep Boys)

The JCHA will stop issuing random choice lottery tickets at 3:00 P.M. on APRIL 29, 2011. Tickets will have to be filled out completely and mailed to the JCHA postmarked no later than MAY 13, 2011. Any ticket postmarked after that date will not be accepted. Any ticket that is not mailed will not be accepted. Any ticket with incomplete information will not be accepted.
All of the accepted tickets will be held in a pool and drawings will be conducted for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program by the Jefferson County Housing Authority through December 31, 2011. The dates of the drawings will be published in separate Public Notices. The people that have their ticket drawn will be eligible to apply for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. The lottery winners’ ticket numbers will be posted at the JCHA offices and posted on the JCHA website ( The lottery winners will be notified within 30 days and will receive directions for applying for JCHA’s Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. ”

  1. Dear Maria,

To clarify, the Father Ed Judy House does not have a Section 8 Housing program. We offer semi-transitional housing to families who are experiencing homelessness and we also continue to provide voluntary support services to families who have moved into housing. We encourage our families to submit their names to the Section 8 waiting lists at local public housing authorities whenever they open. Many have received Section 8 because they have submitted their name to each list, kept their contact information current – and have had a little luck.

Counties and cities in Colorado have their own Section 8 Programs which run through their public housing authorities (for example, the Denver Housing Authority.) Here is a link for an overview of the program:

In addition, Section 8 is widely sought after and there are very few spots. Usually, each city or county has no more than one time to get on the waiting list EACH YEAR. Waiting lists are thousands of people long. So many people would like this type of housing versus the number of slots available that the process of choosing names is called a “lottery.”

We try and post on this website whenever we hear of a public housing authority opening their waiting list to add names. It is an excellent program, however, Section 8 should never be your Plan A.

  2. I really like your blog.. very nice colors & theme.
Did you create this website yourself or did you hire someone to
do it for you? Plz reply as I’m looking to construct my own blog and would like to find out where u got this from. kudos

    • Thank you. Actually, we happily use a free template that is available through wordpress. We have modified it over the years – but generally love its ease of use – and flexibility. No, we did not hire someone — we are a small, not-for-profit shelter : ) — so most of what we do has to be ‘economical.’ Good luck!
